For a look into the Wild West, visit the desolate ghost town of Bodie, California. This empty town is nestled in the sandy hills east of the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains and southeast of Lake Tahoe. Like many western towns, Bodie got its start as a camp for miners chasing the promise of gold. However the town never lived up to settler’s hopes and was eventually abandoned. The family that owned much of the land that the town was built on hired people to guard the abandoned buildings from vandalism and looting. Today visitors can tour an abandoned gold mill, walk down the deserted streets, and admire artifacts such as a 1937 Chevrolet coupe.
