Kadykchan was built by Gulag prisoners to serve as a coal mining town. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the town lost its profits and was soon abandoned. The winters are frigid and austere, especially with no services available for the town. Intrepid urban explorers can only enter by taking the rarely used Kolyma highway that was built specifically for the miners of the town. Today, urban explorers looking through the abandoned town can see the many varieties of ghost structures in the building. Some of the buildings are covered in rusted stains, with crumbling walls and broken windows.
