For a bibliophile’s dream, visit the Kansas City Public Library’s Community Bookshelf. The bookshelf design obscures the Central Library Parking Garage. Unlike the brutalist concrete parking garages of many downtown plazas, this monument celebrates the spirit of literacy and education. Visitors can see the monument along 10th Street, between Baltimore Avenue and Wyandotte Street .Each of the twenty-two mylar book spines are approximately nine feet wide and 25 feet tall. Kansas City citizens suggested the titles of the book spines, which include Kansas City Stories, To Kill a Mockingbird, Tao Te Ching, Lord of the Rings, and children’s classics such as Good Night Moon.
