Visitors to the port of Lüderitz should be sure to visit the abandoned ghost town Kolmanskop. Kolmanskop was initially an entertainment town for ambitious diamond miners, with a school, a hospital, homes, and even a casino. Unfortunately with the depression of diamond fever came the end of Kolmanskop. Now the formerly booming miner’s vacation destination is swallowed by the dunes. Visitors to this desolate modern ruin can see sand-covered streets, buildings with broken windows and doors torn off their hinges, rusted signs, and dunes overtaking abandoned homes. Some homes have entire rooms filled with sand that has broken down the windows and doors to overtake the structure.
