For a journey through time, hike through the abandoned dunes at the city of Palmyra. Palmyra had been inhabited as early as the neolithic period and grew into a prosperous city that held its own against the Persian empire in the third century AD. Unfortunately, the city was destroyed multiple times over the next millennia and today is reduced to crumbling ruins. Some tombs are well preserved, but stone towers, broken columns, incomplete pedestals, barren springs and broken temples are all that remain of some of these formerly glorious structures. The area is also currently incredibly dangerous, and truly only for the most reckless to visit.
