The Yungang Grottoes are located near the iconic mountainside hanging temple in Datong and several hours from Beijing, one of modern China’s economic and cultural centers. Art lovers will enjoy the naturalistic forms in these ancient statues, many of which tower above modern tourists. There are very few Buddhist monuments of this sheer size left in the world. Tourists will see that these monuments honor different values and stories of the Buddhist religion. They are also wonderfully ornate, with some grottoes featuring dozens of unique carved figures surrounding a single giant Buddha. For a rare look into classic China, visit the Yungang Grottoes.
