For a truly surreal and discomfiting experience, visit the Korean Demilitarized Zone. This is a strip of neutral area between the tense neighbors North and South Korea. On one side is North Korea, infamous for its heavy censorship, relentless propaganda and cult-like worship of its ruthless dictator. On the other side is the incredibly cosmopolitan South Korea. Travelers can visit the demilitarized zone by paying for a tour, usually from Seoul in South Korea. The ambience of the zone is incredibly eerie, tense, and hostile. There is a sense that a single false move could set off a horrendous tragedy, so the visitor must obey many rules in this incredibly strange area.
