China is the land of ancient temples and iconic stone forests. The Stone Forest of Kunming is truly unique and beautiful for its gray karst towers and formations. Geologists think that the region may have once been a shallow sea. Today tall karst towers extend as far as the eye can see, evoking images of petrified trees. The karst towers are gray with white streaks, and are peppered by tall light green trees. Majestic mountain ranges fill the distance. Legend has it that the stones in the forest are made of heartbroken maidens who were forbidden from marrying their closest suitors. Today, tourists can access the karst monuments by bus or train.
